Trinidad & Tobago just didn't ease up. They didn't give an inch either. I must admit that I know and care almost nothing about netball, and I have stated this fact within earshot of senior netball officials. Needless to say, my comments annoyed them but I did let them know that I agreed with their disgust. These were my true feelings all my life about the game and it was how I felt also at the beginning of the AFNA 2008 Netball Tournament in St. Vincent. You might wonder, why then did I attend the games; that is simple. Trinidad and Tobago. It was a mixture of curiosity, a little concern and some human interest in the only competitors in the tournament who shared the same nationality as my brother George and his kids. I am still learning about them too.
I met the Trinidad and Tobago team at the Piarco International Airport in Trinidad. We were headed in the same direction. Before making friends with the team however, I witnessed one of their members experience an emotional breakdown when she heard that her brother had just been shot. I thought to myself, this could be bad for the team and how sad for their grieving member. I wondered if she would be able to play. I observed team members comforting their saddened team mate and I realised this team had an element that could take them to the top of the tournament. They were a team that was together.
